Weekly – August 15, 2014

18 August, 2014 |  19 Comments | by Pablo Vazquez

Aaand another week went by!

Ton and Francesco were away for SIGGRAPH last week, but that didn’t stop the Gooseberry team and developers at the Blender Institute from having fun.

On the Gooseberry side we’ve been working on character design and script, solid foundations for this week’s goals of defining the look of secondary/extra characters. On the development side, Dalai worked on Multiview and even got time for a little request from Mathieu to make anamorphic bokeh (check pic below!). Antony worked on Pie menus (now on master!) and Video Sequencer goodies. Lukas continued working on the display and render of the new awesome hair system.

Video Stream

Every Friday at 6 PM (Central European Time) we stream live from the Blender Institute. Be the first to know and join us by subscribing to the Gooseberry channel on YouTube.

Last but not least: We’re borrowing the best animator in Iceland. Hjalti Hjalmarsson (from Caminandes: Gran Dillama fame) will be joining us starting tomorrow! So expect more awesome stuff.

That’s it for now, share it around!

I’m so psyched to see progress getting made on Gooseberry! The characters look amazing, and we’re already seeing some goodies getting added into Blender. Keep on pushing!

I once tried the pie menus, but I could not use them touchscreen-only.

  3. Loving the parenting in the video editor, but I can’t resist making a follow up feature request: Any chance that we could parent markers to strips, so the markers move when the strip does?

It would be really useful when using Blender to make voice over plus ‘stuff’ videos (e.g. tutorials) – you often have a few long voice over sound file and there are moments where the person says something, that has to match what is happening on screen at that time – I typically note down these moments with markers, but then you have to remember to move the markers to keep them in line when moving the audio! Its all a bit tedious, and parenting is a good way to fix that work flow:-)

(I am aware that is almost certainly non-trivial. The idea could be taken a lot further, e.g. could make it possible to parent strips to markers as well… plus support other objects, such as key frames and actions in the NLA – at which point everything gets a bit nuts but also crazy flexible. Re-time your animation and the video editor adjusts the entire shot!)

That’s a very good idea ! The best way might be to just be able to add markers directly on a strip (a new kind of markers…) I’ll keep this in mind :) For the rest, it also sounds good too, but a bit more “in depth” rethink of the whole thing… For now I try to think of the sequencer as an editor for animation movie, linked to the futur red-curant project to connect asset management to the edit of a project. So you only requiere simple things, yet very complex to implement with versioning and connections to an external asset manager…
Anyway, that’s very interesting points you raise here !

      • Ciriaco says:

And it would also be a good tool: the ability to link different cameras of the scene to single marks of this strip-scene, this would allow a quick way to changing the rhythm of scene and investigate different versions , changing shots in draft version.

        greetings

I think what you want is “Sync Markers”, which you’ll find in the view menu. It works in all animation editors, afaik. I am not sure if that is what you want, but i think it comes close. In VSE it works globally though, so it reacts to every strip-movement.

      • matray says:

Interesting Sebastian ! Looks like it’s already there but I can’t manage to make the “sync markers” anywhere (official build 2.71 on mac)… Or I don’t understand how it’s suppose to work…

the sheep looks like howard stern. :)

The salesman looks a bit ‘goofy’ like Steve Irwin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE1HDSipRxU

  6. J. says:

Love the anamorphic bokeh, looks very pleasing!
Are there major animated feature films which have also been rendered with an anamorphic look?

  7. Dario says:

I prefer the second sheep better, the last one. I like the aesthetics of the character, “big eyes” isn’t always the way to go in animation, not for all characters. I feel his expression is already telling a story, his eyes are saying he doesn’t feel good where he is, there you have the conflict in just one shot.
Great work so far, looking forward to see how it develops further.

    • Big Fan says:

Agreed the smaller eyes look better. Ask Howard Stern to do the voice. Never know he might go for it… :) Nothing like a well known name to help sell a movie

  8. certainly like your web site but you have to test the spelling on several of your posts.
Several of them are rife with spelling issues
and I to find it very troublesome to inform the reality on the other hand I
    will surely come back again.
